SHirley testa College Scholarship Application
About the Scholarship
South County Youth Soccer Club is an important part of the fabric of our community. For a generation or more, through the Club’s competitive (“travel”) teams and recreational (“rec”) teams, soccer skills have been developed, valuable lessons like sportsmanship and teamwork have been learned, and friendships have been formed between players, coaches, and families.
Central to the Club’s success was always Shirley Testa, who for more than twenty-two years - up to her retirement in 2021 - served the Club in multiple roles, including as its Registrar and Office Manager. During this time Shirley was the face of the Club and the first point of contact to the community and thousands of families. She was passionate about listening to family’s needs, always putting the players first, and ensuring overall that kids have an outlet for just being kids playing the game of soccer. Always pleasant, always willing to help (far beyond any job description), Shirley was devoted to fulfilling the Club’s mission of providing an enjoyable, affordable and quality soccer experience and valued integrity, teamwork, fair play, community and having fun. Shirley left an indelible mark on the Club and the community.
Shirley’s time with the Club was her second career. Prior to SCYSC, she was a long tenured educator in South County. Shirley spent 28 years at North Kingstown HS as a Teacher and Administrator. She retired as Vice Principal in 1998. Of course, her devotion to the development of kids was, again, central to her vocation.
To honor Shirley’s time and dedication to SCYSC, the Board of Directors has renamed its annual scholarship to the SCYSC Shirley Testa College Scholarship. In addition to the typical criteria for scholarship winner(s) selection: (your time with SCYSC and playing soccer, volunteerism) we also seek candidates who exhibit similar behaviors and characteristics that Shirley demonstrated and were important to her while she was with the Club.
The Club awards 2-3 scholarships each year ranging from $250 to $1000. The amounts awarded vary based on the number of qualified applicants.
