  • SCYSC Recreational Handbook: Based on the Laws of the Game, modified regulations as needed for SCYSC Rec league play.
  • Practices & Games:
    • Practices are held 1x/ week during the week. They are led by a professional Challenger coach who will demonstrate age appropriate activities/drills. Coaches are then expected to break away with their teams and execute those activities/drills with their individual teams. Additional training resources and drills can be found here.
    • Games are held 1x/week on Saturdays.
    • Practice & Game schedule is based on age division and can be found on the Recreational program area of our web site.

Competitive Program Info

SCYSC Competitive Teams participate in either Super Liga (Rhode Island Competitive League) or the NECSL (New England Club Soccer League). Teams are placed based on competitive readiness, developmental fit, and league eligibility requirements, as determined by the Competitive Director in collaboration with coaches.

League Descriptions:
New England Club Soccer Leage (NECSL) is a multi-state, club-based league that offers top-level competition across New England. Only SCYSC’s most competitive teams that meet NECSL league requirements will participate in NECSL.
These requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • SCYSC must be the player’s primary club
  • Players may not roster or compete for another NECSL club
  • Teams must meet league standards for commitment, attendance, and roster consistency

Super Liga provides a strong, competitive, and developmentally appropriate league environment across Rhode Island (and neighboring MA and CT towns). The league offers multiple divisions to ensure appropriate competitive balance, with placement guided by the SCYSC Competitive Director and coaches.
  • Super Liga Divisions:
    • Anchor Division: The highest level of Super Liga competition. Teams typically demonstrate a strong level of technical and tactical ability.
    • Classic Gold Division: Above-average technical and tactical ability
    • Classic Blue Division: Average technical and tactical ability
    • Rhody Division: Developing and less-experienced players

League Resources:
  • NECSL Rules
  • Super Liga Rules & Policies Handbook: Based on the Laws of the Game, with league-specific modifications.
    • All coaches are responsible for knowing and complying with theleague rules.
  • NECSL Website
  • Super Liga Website: Includes schedules, field locations, directions, weather-related cancellations, and league communications.

Competitive Team Expectations:
  • Team Training: Competitive teams should have at least two team practices / week during fall and spring seasons, led by their coach. Team practices start indoors at Wide World of Indoor Sports (WWIS) in late February/early March for the Spring Season before moving outdoors in April.
  • Technical Training: Technical practice for competitive players is provided 1x/week in addition to team practices. Technical practices are led by a professional Challenger coach and participation by players (and their coaches) are highly encouraged. These trainings focus on individual ball skills, control of the ball, passing technique and small sided activities that reinforce the individual development of each player. The schedule for technical practices is provided by the Competitive Director each season. Coaches should encourage their teams to participate in these trainings by adding them to their team calendar and attending as coach support when possible.
  • Winter Training: Additional skills training is available November - February at Wide World of Indoor Sports (WWIS) in NK. This includes Winter Academies, Goalie Training, and Open Play (pick up scrimmages). We need coach volunteers to help run these programs.
  • Game Schedule: Games are typically on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Coaches are responsible for reviewing and finalizing their game schedule each season. If there are conflicts, coaches must make a change proposal to the opposing coach. In order to propose a new time for a home game, you must ensure a field is available.
  • Field reservations: Coaches must ensure that home fields are available when finalizing their game schedule. They also must reserve field time for team practices. This is usually coordinated by the Competitive Director in the pre-season and is maintained in a Google Form. Field availability for rescheduling can also be initially checked in the Google Form.
  • Important Match Day information:
    • Scheduling Referees: Refs are scheduled for games by the league. If a Ref does not show for your game, please contact the SCYSC Competitive Director and the Referee Coordinator.
    • Paying Referees:
      • NECSL: Referee payments are handled directly by the league
      • Super Liga: Coaches are responsible for paying Referees prior to the start of each game. Teams split the cost of the Referee(s) and cash is handed to the Head or Assistant Ref at check in. The fee breakdown is in the Superliga Handbook for each age group. SCYSC provides coaches with a single check at the beginning of the season to cover Referee fees, that they may cash at the bank into small increments to pay their fees each week. We recommend separating these into envelopes with rosters and game cards (for home games) at the start of the season.
    • Game Cards: The home team coach is responsible for the Game Cards. He/she should fill in the date, teams, age, division and game number on the game card and provide it to the Referee prior to the start of the game. For NECSL, the home coach is responsible to input the final score online. For Super Liga, the referee inputs the final score and the coach must verify it.
    • Rescheduling games: This happens through a single point of contact when communicating to the leagues: the SCYSC Competitive Director. Upon cancellation for weather, contact the opposing coach and try to settle on a reschedule date. Contact the Competitive Director to verify field space.
  • SRI Festival & SRI Cup: In addition to 8 regular season games, in the late spring Super Liga offers the SRI Festival (for U8-U10 teams) and the SRI Cup (for U11 teams and older). Coaches with Super Liga teams are responsible for entering their teams. An email with registeration information is circulated in the spring from the league (and typically from the SCYSC Competitive Director as well).
  • Playoffs: Super Liga and NECSL have playoffs in the spring for U11 - U19 teams. There are no playoffs in the fall.
  • Tournaments: Tournaments are a great opportunity for more touches, competition and team building.
    • Included in competitive registration is participation in our Club's annual Seaside Classic tournament and one additional away tournament.  Additional tournaments can be entered (entry fees not covered by SCYSC). Coaches are responsible for entering their teams into tournaments.
    • For the one tournament/year covered by SCYSC, the coach should provide the cost to the Director of Tournaments, Director of Finance, and the Director of Competitive for approval. The Coach pays for the tournament and SCYSC will provide reimbursement via check. For any additional out of pocket tournaments, Coaches are responsible to collect fees from participating players/families.
    • The SCYSC Registrar can assist with tournament roster preparation and paperwork as needed.
    • The following tournaments are typically considered depending on age level and experience:
      • Seacoast United Capitol Cup - Colombus Day Weekend in New Hampshire
      • Barrington Invitational Tournament - Early November
      • Pourtsmouth Invitational Tournament - Father's Day weekend in June

sideline etiquette

Six tips to help make youth soccer better for everyone.
  • Parents should avoid ‘coaching’ from the sideline while watching their child’s game.
  • No one should criticize the referee. The coach should be the only one interacting with the referee.
  • Focus on the benefits of the game rather than the score.
  • Think when interacting with opposing fans.
  • Don’t stress out over the game.
  • Parents should save issues with the coach for the next day.
