SCYSC Base Resume

SCYSC Base Resume

The following resume is what SCYSC recommends that prospective student athlete’s use as a recruiting “tool” when contacting college coaches.  The student athlete should keep the formatted areas as structured – Personal Information, Academics, Soccer Experience, References, Soccer Accomplishments, Other Athletics, Academic Accomplishments and Extracurricular Activities.  If you do not wish to use one of these areas, because you feel you do not have sufficient experiences we recommend you delete it, but keep the “areas” in the same order.

Page one of the resume should contain the “Qualifying Elements”.  We define these as GPA, SAT/ACT score and Rank in Class.  This is what will tell the coach if you will meet NCAA requirements.  Also, include physical attributes – height and weight.  Also, include contact information – your e-mail & phone: parents e-mail & phone and reference contact information.  Lastly, include your sport experience – High School, Club team, ODP, Camps, etc.  This information should be on page one, it is the most important.

When preparing your individual resume, we recommend that you limit your resume to 2-3 pages.  Two pages would be the ideal length.  If length becomes an issue, we recommend that you eliminate areas from the bottom.  For example, eliminate “Extracurricular Activities first; then Academic Achievements and Other Athletics.  We would not recommend deleting any areas beyond these three.

For teams that will participate in “College Showcase” tournaments and will be preparing a “Team Book” to handout to coaches we recommend that each player use the ‘Base” resume and limit their resume to two pages.  Then, structure your Team Book, as a “Book”.  By this, we mean that when a coach opens the book he see’s both pages, for the one player at the same time.  The coach should not have to turn/flip pages to see the athlete’s whole resume.  In addition, you want each resume in the same order so the coach knows after two resumes that he will see the same information for each player at the same spot on each page.  This prevents the coach from having to search for GPA, SAT or any other information he needs to see quickly, to determine if the student athlete will meet the schools admission requirements.

We also recommend that a student athlete keep the subsection titled “Tournaments of Note”.  Most soccer tournaments today are using “Got Soccer” to manage their tournaments.  One benefit of this management tool is that all tournaments are “rated” regarding the level of competition.  Therefore, if a prospective college coach wants to know what level of competition you have competed against, he/she can gauge this from accessing the “Got Soccer” database and looking at the “rated” level of the tournaments you have attended.  However, if you feel this will be detrimental to your goal, delete this subsection.
