SCYSC players cleaning up the Ocean State.
The SCYSC Sparks team (and friends) all picked up 3 hours of community service for picking up a lot of trash along the Narragansett coastline at the Surfrider Foundation RI Chapter Spring 2010 Beach Clean Up held this past Saturday May 15th.
This was a great (eye opening) experience for all of these kids. What a great group of kids. Not one moan or groan form any of them. This was a perfect day for them to do this. Spring is always tricky. I have done these beach clean ups in the cold, in the rain, in the fog and yes one day it even snowed.
Sorry to get all gloom and doom here but...look closely at the feet of the photo of Sarah DeMoranville and Hannah Jane Sorlien to get an idea of just how bad things can get. The garbage cans and bags that you see in the photos were fully loaded with all kinds of crap just like that. Remember the crying Indian by the river side commercial from way back in the day? Just what kind of world are we leaving our kids kids kids? Considering how long man kind has been kicking around we sure have messed the place up pretty good in a short amount of time. Reduce Reuse Recycle.
Besides the trash clean up, fresh air and sunshine the girls got a brief field site classroom session on beach erosion and how seawalls affect coastal erosion. Keep and eye on what is in the plans for the Matunuck beach area (front page article in the Friday 5/14 Narragansett Times).
Thanks again to all the girls for helping out. Big thanks to Mark DeMoranville for his help.
